Dog Treadmill

By weightloss85 at 2009-06-26 06:19:03
Dogs need their exercise just like people do. Regular exercise helps your dogs maintain a healthy weight and strengthen their muscles. It also keeps them from getting into mischief around your home due to all of that pent up energy. Ask anyone with a well exercised dog and they will tell you their home is a more peaceful place.

A dog treadmill can be a great addition to your dog's exercise regimen. If you believe a short jog around the block or a short 10 minute play session in the backyard is enough, think again. A dog treadmill can be used for a wide variety of training and exercise purposes.

A dog treadmill can also be used for sporting dogs as well. They are perfect to use when the weather outside is not ideal. Almost any type of sporting event dog can benefit from a dog treadmill. Treadmills are also great when helping to recover from an injury. Consult with your veterinarian first, but now people are starting to realize that the faster you get the joints and muscles working after injury, the faster the recovery.

A dog treadmill can be either motor or dog-powered, and the dog-powered ones will cost the least. Dog-powered treadmills have been around as canine training and fitness tools for a very long time.

Pet treadmills are built differently than human models are, mainly because pets walk differently than people do. If you've ever tried your dog on your own treadmill, you'll know how difficult it is for him to maneuver on as well as how dangerous it could be for him. A pet treadmill is designed just for use by our four-legged friends. It not only helps keep their bodies active, but daily exercise is important in keeping them from getting bored and helps keep their minds alert. A bored dog is bound to start exhibiting some behaviors you aren't going to like.

This article will tell you what to look for when choosing a treadmill for your pooch and tips for training your dog to walk on it:

1 Get the Right Belt Length.

Treadmill belts range from 50" to 62". If you have a smaller dog like a poodle or terrier you probably don't need to choose a longer belt, since these breeds aren't very long.

2 Keep Your Treadmill Clean.

Unfortunately your dog will shed (and probably drool) over your treadmill while he's walking. Hair, dirt and dust are the number one enemies to treadmill maintenance.Make sure you wipe down your treadmill and keep it clean on a regular basis, especially after your dog uses it. This will help keep it in proper running condition and save you unnecessary repair bills.

3 Watch Those Paws!

Dogs, especially the larger ones, can really tear up a treadbelt if their claws are not properly clipped. If you want to save the integrity of your treadbelt, make sure to keep your dog's paws properly trimmed down.

4 Start slow and Make it a Positive Experience.

I recommend you talk to a professional trainer before you try to train your dog to walk on a treadmill. However from my experience, here are some tips.
